Throughout the film, Valak attempts to kill the nuns in the abbey and possess at least one person to escape from its walls. Through that portal emerges the demon Valak, an entity known as The Defiler and a tormentor to the nuns in the abbey. It revolves around an Abbey that, following a bombing during World War II, reopens a portal to Hell initially created centuries earlier. In fact, rather than each film settling on blatant teases to the next entry, The Conjuring Universe leans more into subtle connections that the average viewer may miss on the first watch.Ĭhronologically, the connections begin with 2018's The Nun. However, as the franchise continued, it became evident that the horrors within the seven released films extend far beyond the Warrens' experiences. Beginning with James Wan's The Conjuring, the franchise started with a horrifying introduction to the paranormal investigations of Ed and Lorraine Warren.
